PHP Conference on ADHD & Autism Spectrum

Carol Ann McAusland, M.Ed.

Although the weekend was gloriously sunny, I spent it indoors at a local conference.  And, I’m so glad I did!

It was my first time attending a conference as a vendor, rather than a consumer.  I joined the director of sales for Sopris West in N. California, Pat Ray, at her Step Up to Writing Table.

Step Up to Writing is my favorite “tool” for teaching all students.  It is scalable to every grade level, K- 12, and every student population, including special needs. And, STUW is one of the only “tools” a teacher or parent can start using almost immediately.  The author, Maureen Auman, designed the program so that anyone can teach writing, step by step.  Showing off my student’s writing was a joy!  Despite their differing diagnoses (ADHD, LD, HFA, Aspergers, low cognitive), they have all learned to write solid non-fiction text, have improved their reading comprehension tremendously, and learned to organize their thoughts within the framework of Step Up.  More on STUW to come in another post.

What was best, however, was meeting other professionals and parents who are striving to create the best learning and home environments for their students.  I look forward to networking with all of you!  In the meantime, please contact me if I can be of any assistance to you.
