Conquering Adversities

Conquering Adversities

While I may have had trouble in school, in the past throughout my four years of tutoring with Carol Ann I have learned to succeed in all subjects. First, due to my dyslexia, I always was graded down for messy work. When I came to Carol Ann’s she taught me to use resources like a computer to show what I was thinking. Also, due to my ADD I was disorganized and never focused on my work. In order to conquer these adversities, she suggested to me to see a doctor for my medication which led me to better attention. Also, my paragraphs would often be all over the place so she showed me how to use a Step Up to Writing outline before working. Finally, I learned a simple, yet effective, organizational system that I use and get help to organize it with her every week. Despite my differences, I have been more successful in school due to Carol Ann’s advocating and help.

While most tutors can teach skills, it is rare for anyone to help with a student’s feelings. Before I started I would often be unsuccessful at school and often be in trouble with my teacher. When Carol Ann began teaching me, she advocated with my teachers so they would know what to do about my disability. This was helpful because the teachers were more understanding of me. She also explained how my brain works. She showed me how I needed to learn differently and I’m not stupid, I just need to show my knowledge. With her help, much stress and confusion has been relieved.
